Angiriai Reservoir

Angiriai Reservoir, reservoir in Lithuania

Angiriai Reservoir is a man-made lake in the Kėdainiai District of central Lithuania, created by damming the Šušvė river to control water flow and generate hydroelectric power. The water body covers about 2.5 square kilometers with a winding shoreline featuring numerous small coves, and reaches depths up to 11.6 meters (38 feet), while steep banks in some areas, particularly near the Pilsupiai Outcrop, offer views across the surrounding green countryside.

The reservoir was created in 1980 when a dam was built across the Šušvė river to manage water flow and provide hydroelectric power for the region. In 2000, the dam was rebuilt for greater durability and a small hydroelectric plant was added, which continues to supply electricity to nearby communities while helping to control water levels and prevent flooding.

The reservoir has become woven into the daily life of nearby villages, where locals visit to fish, walk along the shore, or simply spend quiet time in nature. The water and its surroundings serve as a gathering place for the community, especially during warmer months when families and friends meet for outdoor activities and leisure.

The shoreline is accessible for walking, fishing, and boating, with paths that wind along the coves and banks making navigation straightforward for visitors. Weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends, offering a more peaceful experience, and the area remains open year-round, though winter conditions may affect water activities and access to certain routes.

The Pilsupiai Outcrop at the lake's edge features a natural rock formation that visitors often explore, offering a spot with views over the water and countryside. Nearby stands the Skinderiškis Dendrological Park, a quiet space on higher ground with trees and plants from around the world, creating a peaceful place for walks and observation.
