Church of St. Philip and St. Jacob, Onuškis

Church of St. Philip and St. Jacob, Onuškis, Catholic church in Onuškis, Lithuania.

The Church of St. Philip and St. Jacob in Onuškis is a classicist stone and brick structure featuring three naves and a columned portico entrance. The building sits within an enclosed churchyard that contains a wooden belfry and numerous graves dating back through the centuries.

A church has stood at this location since first being recorded in 1526, but the current stone and brick building was constructed between 1823 and 1829 under the direction of landowner K. Šetkevičius. This construction represents a major renewal of the religious structure serving the area during the early 19th century.

The church takes its name from two saints, reflecting the religious identity of the local community that has worshipped here for centuries. Today, visitors can sense the spiritual significance this place holds for residents who gather to celebrate their faith.

The site is easily accessible with walls surrounding the grounds, making it straightforward to explore at your own pace. Visiting during daylight hours allows you to see the architectural details and cemetery clearly.

The churchyard holds the remains of Donatas Malinauskas, a signer of Lithuania's Independence Act, whose reburial took place here in 1993. This connection to a founder of modern Lithuania makes the site a quiet memorial to the nation's recent history.
