Mokas, Glacial boulder in Pabaiskas Eldership, Lithuania
Mokas is a large glacial boulder located near Lake Tauragnas in the Pabaiskas region of Lithuania. The stone stretches about 6 meters in length and rises about 4 meters high, standing out prominently from the surrounding flat terrain.
This stone was transported by glaciers from Finland to Lithuania during the last ice age and left at its current location. The movement of ice masses fundamentally shaped the landscape of this region.
This boulder is rooted in Lithuanian folklore, telling the story of a man named Mokas who turned to stone after his wife drowned in the nearby lake. Locals connect this site to their oral traditions and use it as a link to their cultural past.
The boulder stands in a maintained park area with mowed grass and is freely accessible year-round for visitors. The location is relatively open and offers clear views of the stone from multiple angles.
Next to this stone lies a smaller boulder called Mokiukas, which according to local legend represents the petrified son of the original man. The two stones together tell a family story that has been passed down through generations.
