Apuolė hillfort

The hillfort rises at the meeting point of Luoba River and Brukis Stream, featuring defensive earthworks and wooden fortification remains from ancient times.

During the Viking attack of 854, approximately 15,000 Curonian defenders protected the fortress for eight days before negotiating a settlement with Swedish King Olof.

The site represents an essential center of early Curonian tribal society, with archaeological findings revealing military, economic, and social structures of Baltic peoples.

The archaeological complex spans 318,028 square meters and welcomes visitors throughout the year, with guided tours available through the municipal tourism office.

Researchers discovered an oak well ring during excavations, providing evidence of advanced engineering methods used by ancient Baltic tribes.
