Apuolė hillfort

Apuolė hillfort is an ancient fortified settlement located where the Luoba River and Brukis Stream converge, situated in Skuodas District. The site displays earthen ramparts and traces of wooden defensive structures that date back to prehistoric times.

The hillfort was founded by early Baltic peoples and developed into a major defensive stronghold for Curonian communities. Over time, the settlement experienced external threats and demonstrated the resilience of those who inhabited it.

Excavations uncovered a prehistoric oak well ring, revealing how skillfully the Baltic inhabitants engineered their water systems. This artifact shows technical knowledge and construction methods that were surprisingly advanced for the period.
