Lower Prut, Nature reserve in Cahul District, Moldova
Lower Prut is a nature reserve covering around 1,700 hectares of lakes and floodplain areas along the Prut River. The landscape consists of different wetland systems with reed beds, open water, and marshy sections.
The reserve was officially established in 1991 to protect its ecological variety and support scientific research. This designation was Moldova's way of safeguarding one of its important natural areas.
The communities living nearby maintain traditional practices that are tied to the wetland environment. Visitors notice how daily life and nature protection are intertwined in this rural setting.
There are marked paths for nature watching, but access varies depending on water levels, especially around Lake Beleu. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, when migratory birds pass through and the trails are most walkable.
Lake Beleu is covered with white water lilies that create natural patterns across the water surface. These aquatic plants are especially striking in summer and are an uncommon sight in this region.
