Toltrele Prutului, Geological formation in Druța, Moldova.
Toltrele Prutului is a limestone formation that stretches for about 200 kilometers along the Middle Prut River through the Druța region. The rocks display layered structures and varied shapes that reflect millions of years of geological processes.
These limestone formations developed 10 to 20 million years ago when tropical seas covered the region of Moldova. Later, the ground rose and brought these ancient marine deposits to the surface.
The limestone reefs of northern Moldova share their genesis with the Australian coral chain, now visible on land due to substrate elevation.
Several sections of this formation are legally protected under state conservation status established in the 1970s and 1990s. Visitors should stay on marked paths to help preserve these geological features.
The limestone rocks here contain fossils of corals, mollusks, and marine algae from prehistoric tropical waters. These fossils allow visitors to see the region's marine past directly preserved in the stone.
