Lake Globočica, reservoir in Macedonia
Lake Globočica is a man-made body of water on the Crn Drim river in Struga Municipality. The lake stretches for about 12 kilometers and is held back by a dam that harnesses the water for electricity generation and water management purposes.
The lake was built in 1965 to serve local needs for electricity and water management. Since then, the dam system has worked with Lake Spilje downstream to form a network that regulates water flow and generates power for the region.
The name Globočica comes from the local language and reflects the geographical features of the area. The lake serves as a quiet gathering place where visitors can experience nature without crowds or commercial development.
The lake sits about 20 kilometers northwest of Struga and can be reached easily by car or local transport. The surrounding area is quiet and sparsely developed, allowing visitors to enjoy nature and explore the landscape at their own pace.
The dam crown is about 90 meters long and 82.5 meters high, with a base width of 270 meters, controlling the water volumes the lake can store. This engineering structure demonstrates how water is harnessed for power generation, and in colder months, snow sometimes falls on the lake surface.
