Kalimanci Lake, artificial lake in North Macedonia
Kalimanci Lake is a large reservoir in eastern North Macedonia created by a dam built in 1969. Stretching 14 kilometers in length and covering over 4 square kilometers, the water winds through rolling hills and green fields.
The lake formed in 1969 when a dam was built across the Bregalnica River to store water for irrigation and electricity generation. This infrastructure project was crucial for the region, enabling improved water management for surrounding communities.
The name comes from the local language and relates to the surrounding area. Locals use the shores for picnics and relaxation, especially in summer when families gather to spend time by the water.
Visitors reach the lake best by car via small roads and dirt paths leading to different spots along the shore. The warmest months offer the best conditions for walking and exploring, with dry paths and comfortable weather.
The lake holds over 120 million cubic meters of water that irrigates roughly 28,000 hectares of farmland in the Kocani and Ovce Pole regions. This enormous volume supports both agriculture and powers a nearby hydroelectric plant.
