Nativity of the Theotokos Cave Church, Cave church and heritage site in Kališta, North Macedonia.
The Nativity of the Theotokos Cave Church sits within natural rock formations on the western shore of Lake Ohrid, approximately 4 kilometers south of Struga. The site developed from a single carved space into a larger monastery complex with several connected structures.
The cave church was created during the 14th or 15th century as a sacred space for worship. Over time, additional buildings were added around the original carved chamber to expand it into a functioning monastic community.
The interior walls display frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries created by local Orthodox artisans. These religious paintings show the artistic style that developed in this part of the Balkans during the medieval period.
The monastery remains an active religious site where nuns live and welcome visitors interested in religion and culture. The location high above the lake means rocky pathways and steps should be expected when planning a visit.
A second sacred chamber sits carved higher in the rocks above the main church level. This upper space shows how worshippers saw the natural rock formations themselves as part of their spiritual practice.
