Trebeništa

Trebeništa is an archaeological necropolis in Debarca Municipality situated at roughly 710 meters elevation. The site contains burial grounds with remains and grave goods from Iron Age communities, offering insights into how these ancient people organized their burial practices.

The site was discovered in 1918 by Bulgarian soldiers during military operations in the region. Archaeologist Karel Škorpil subsequently conducted excavations that revealed and documented significant Iron Age artifacts from the local population.

The site reflects burial customs of Iron Age communities who lived near ancient Lychnidos, the settlement that would later become Ohrid. These graves show how people honored their dead through ritual practices that reveal their beliefs and values.

The site is accessible from Ohrid and sits in hilly terrain that requires proper footwear and time to explore. Visitors should expect exposed archaeological remains with limited facilities and exercise caution while moving through the excavated areas.

The excavations have uncovered Iron Age metal objects that reveal the sophisticated metalworking techniques of these ancient people. These finds demonstrate advanced craftsmanship and suggest connections to wider trading networks of the period.
