Слепченски манастир

Slepče Monastery is an Orthodox monastery located in the western part of North Macedonia, built on the slopes of the Ilinica mountain range. Its stone walls are constructed from carefully carved travertine blocks that have endured over the centuries.

The monastery was first documented around 1393-1394 when monks transcribed a liturgical text in Old Bulgarian language within its walls. This early record indicates it was already an established religious center during medieval times.

The monastery served as a place where monks engaged in the sacred work of copying religious texts, keeping spiritual traditions alive over many centuries.

The monastery sits near Slepče village in Demir Hisar municipality and is accessible from the western approach through the settlement. Visitors should plan to enter the area on foot to fully explore the site and its surroundings.

In 1845, scholar Viktor Grigorovich discovered an important literary work called the Slepče Apostol within the monastery, a Middle Bulgarian manuscript. This find revealed how significant the site was as a place where valuable religious works were preserved.
