The neoclassical building features Doric and Ionic columns, with a monumental staircase leading to reading rooms containing extensive collections of manuscripts.
The library originated in 1555 when Grand Master Claude de la Sengle ordered all books from deceased Order of St John members to be stored.
The institution maintains the largest collection of Melitensia and houses over 60 incunabula, along with papal documents dating from 1113.
The library opens Monday through Friday from 8:15 AM to 5:00 PM during winter months and provides free entry to all visitors.
The archives contain 7000 volumes documenting 900 years of the Hospitallers of St John from 1107 to 1798, including rare medieval manuscripts.
