Casa del Commun Tesoro, Grade 1 heritage building in Republic Square, Valletta, Malta.
Casa del Commun Tesoro is a two-story historic building on Republic Square with a central courtyard at its core. Its interior features ornately decorated ceilings and a grand stone staircase that dominates the main floor.
The building was constructed in the late 1500s and originally served as the Treasury for the Order of St. John. It later became Malta's first post office, marking its transition from military to civilian administration.
Today the building houses the Casino Maltese, a private members' club where visitors can observe how Valletta's social elite has gathered for generations. The club preserves the customs and elegance of 19th-century social life within its carefully maintained rooms.
The building sits on Republic Square in central Valletta and is easily accessible on foot from most parts of the capital. Since it operates as a private members' club, interior access is limited, but the exterior architecture can be admired from the public square.
The facade features a specialized noon-mark sundial decorated with zodiacal symbols that indicates only the midday hour throughout the year. This astronomical detail represents an uncommon example of practical timekeeping art embedded into the building's Renaissance design.
