Spinola Palace, Baroque palace in Valletta, Malta
Spinola Palace is a three-story baroque building with an ornate facade located in central Valletta near Republic Street. The structure spans two preserved wings that occupy corners along both Republic Street and St Frederick Street.
The palace was constructed in 1688 by Fra Paolo Raffaele Spinola, taking its name from its founder. The building underwent significant renovations in 1733 under architect Romano Fortunato Carapecchia's supervision.
The palace displays Italian artistic craftsmanship through its interior ceiling frescoes that shaped local taste. These works reflect the refined cultural sophistication that characterized Valletta during this era.
Access inside the building is limited since it now functions as a bank headquarters. Visitors can appreciate the remarkable exterior and its clock from the street, which are clearly visible from Republic Street.
The building's clock was stripped of its decorative crown during the 1798 French occupation of Malta. This loss marks a turning point in Valletta's history when authority changed hands and many symbols of power were destroyed.
