Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Minor basilica in Valletta, Malta
The Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a neoclassical structure in Valletta with a dominant oval dome rising above the cityscape. The interior features red marble columns and an early painting of the saint venerated as the patroness of the Carmelite order.
The building was founded in 1570 as the Church of Annunciation and later transferred to the Carmelite order, who dedicated it to the saint it now honors. Following wartime damage, it underwent reconstruction and took on its present neoclassical appearance.
The basilica serves as an active place of worship for the Carmelite community in Valletta. Visitors will notice the red marble interior and religious artworks that reflect the devotion of those who gather here.
The building stands within walking distance of central Valletta near St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral. Visitors should know it remains an active place of worship with regular services held throughout the week.
Following severe damage during the Second World War, the building's restoration required several decades of intensive work. The lengthy reconstruction process allowed it to be shaped into the distinct neoclassical form visitors see today.
