Church of Our Lady of Pilar, Valletta, Catholic church in Valletta, Malta
The Church of Our Lady of Pilar is a baroque church in Valletta featuring three bays arranged on two levels with a projecting central section and decorative sculptures adorning the facade. The structure is built from local limestone and displays characteristic baroque design with expressive architectural details.
The church was built starting in 1670 under Grandmaster Nicolas Cotoner and required major reconstruction following an earthquake in 1693. The rebuilding work extended until 1718, establishing the structure seen today.
The interior features paintings by Stefano Erardi and Gio Nicola Buhagiar depicting scenes from the Virgin Mary's life alongside the coat of arms of Grandmaster Perellos. These artworks shape how visitors experience the sacred space and its religious meaning.
The church is located in central Valletta and is managed by Heritage Malta. Visits and religious ceremonies require advance planning and appointment arrangements.
The church houses the tomb of Bailiff Fra Inniquez de Ayerba, a principal benefactor during its original construction. His role in supporting the building's creation is commemorated within these walls.
