Attard, local council of Malta
Attard is a village in Malta's Northern Region located on the slopes below the former capital Mdina. It spans roughly 7 square kilometers and contains a mix of older traditional houses, modern apartment buildings, gardens, small farms, and community facilities.
The village developed as an agricultural settlement and gained its own local council in 1994. Since the 1980s it has grown rapidly, transforming from a quiet rural area into an active neighborhood with shops, markets, and small factories.
The name Attard comes from Arabic meaning 'earth' or 'land', reflecting its agricultural roots. Today the village's identity centers on its gardens, citrus groves, and vegetable market where residents and visitors connect over local produce.
Most visitors explore the village by foot or drive short distances, as daily facilities are conveniently arranged. The streets are tree-lined and buildings stay low-rise, making it easy to navigate and move around.
The village is home to il-Pitkalija, a lively vegetable market where local farmers sell their produce directly and where residents maintain their connection to the land and local production. This market continues to draw visitors and serves as a key social gathering spot beyond commerce.
