Mediterranean Conference Centre, Convention center in Valletta, Malta
The Mediterranean Conference Centre occupies a Baroque building in Valletta with stone walls, high ceilings, and large windows overlooking the Grand Harbour. The facility contains multiple halls equipped with independent sound systems, climate control, and an in-house kitchen capable of serving up to 4,000 meals daily.
The structure began as the Sacra Infermeria hospital in 1574 under Grand Master Jean de la Cassière, treating patients until 1920 when it became a police headquarters. This long history of different purposes eventually led to its transformation into a modern conference facility.
The main auditorium, Republic Hall, hosts international conferences, theatrical performances, and musical events with seating for 1,400 people in a restored historical setting. Visitors experience the space as a cultural gathering place where artistic and intellectual events unfold in an atmosphere shaped by its long past.
The centre is easily accessible with multiple entrances and large events should be booked well in advance. Its location on the Grand Harbour makes it simple to find and convenient to include in a walking tour of Valletta.
The main ward of the building was one of Europe's longest single rooms during its hospital period, accommodating hundreds of patients in one expansive space. This remarkable architectural feature enabled an innovative hospital design that revolutionized medical care during the Baroque era.
