King Salman Mosque, Islamic sanctuary in Malé, Maldives
King Salman Mosque is a major religious building in Malé featuring seven floors, five minarets, and a green dome-shaped structure that resembles a desert tent. The structure spans multiple levels with prayer spaces, classrooms, seminar rooms, and a library dedicated to Islamic studies.
The project began in 2016 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Maldivian independence and construction started in 2018 with support from Saudi Arabia. Its completion marked an important development in the country's modern religious infrastructure.
The mosque functions as a center for religious learning and community gathering, where visitors can observe people in prayer and spiritual discussion. It reflects the deep role of Islam in everyday life across the islands.
The mosque sits on Boduthakurufaanu Magu street near an artificial beach, making it relatively easy to reach by local transport. Visitors should wear modest clothing and note that access outside prayer times may be limited.
The green dome was deliberately designed to echo traditional Bedouin tents, showing how contemporary design reinterprets ancient architectural forms. This merges past and present in an unexpected visual way.
