Chiltepe Peninsula Natural Reserve, Protected natural reserve on Lake Managua's south shore, Nicaragua
Chiltepe Peninsula Natural Reserve is a 1,800-hectare protected area on Lake Managua's south shore containing two volcanic lakes, Apoyeque and Xiloá. These lakes sit within deciduous forest in the Cuapes Mountains at roughly 518 meters elevation.
Apoyeque Lake formed roughly 4,000 years ago when the volcano erupted and left behind a deep crater. That crater filled with water to become a lake roughly 2 kilometers wide with a depth of about 400 meters.
The area serves as a retreat where local people come to spend time by the water and observe wildlife. Residents use it as a place to step away from daily city life and connect with nature.
Visitors can hike, swim in Xiloá Lake, row, sail, and dive within the reserve. The terrain welcomes various water-based and land activities, though it is wise to prepare appropriately depending on which activity you plan to do.
Naguayopa inlet hosts numerous water birds, including the zanatillo, a species found only in Nicaraguan lakes. This rare bird species can be spotted here by patient observers.
