ENCI limestone quarry, Limestone quarry in Sint Pieter, Maastricht, Netherlands.
The ENCI quarry spans across a vast area, featuring exposed limestone walls that reveal geological layers formed during the Late Cretaceous period.
The quarry started operations in 1921 under the Nederlandse Cement Industrie company, extracting materials for cement production until its closure in 2018.
Excavations within the quarry walls led to substantial paleontological findings, including the 1765 discovery of a complete Mosasaurus skull fossil.
Visitors can access designated walking paths and observation points throughout the quarry, with guided tours available through the local nature conservation organization.
The former industrial site now functions as an outdoor research laboratory where scientists study the geological formations and monitor developing ecosystems.
