Erasmus, Bronze statue at Grotekerkplein, Rotterdam, Netherlands
The life-sized bronze sculpture stands on a two-meter-high pedestal, depicting Erasmus in a tabard and bonnet while turning a page of a book.
Commissioned by Rotterdam city council in 1616, Hendrick de Keyser created this first public bronze statue in the Netherlands, completed by his son Pieter in 1622.
The statue represents Rotterdam's intellectual heritage through its depiction of Erasmus, a humanist scholar who contributed to European Renaissance thinking.
The statue underwent restoration works in 1674, 1964, and 1998, including protection measures during World War II when it was buried under sandbags.
Local residents tell of a statue feature where Erasmus appears to turn a page in his bronze book every hour at the Grotekerkplein location.
