Tjeldsund Municipality

Tjeldsund Municipality covers 814 square kilometers of diverse terrain including mainland areas and Tjeldøya island, connected by the Ramsund Bridge, with approximately 1,340 residents living across scattered villages like Evenskjer and Fjelldal.

Established on January 1, 1909, through separation from Lødingen Municipality, Tjeldsund expanded through various mergers over the decades, notably incorporating western parts of Tjeldøya island and unpopulated areas from Evenes Municipality in 1964.

The municipality hosts four Church of Norway parishes including the historic Tjeldsund Church built in 1863 and Skånland Church from 1901, serving as community focal points for religious gatherings and cultural heritage preservation activities.

Evenskjer functions as the administrative center providing essential municipal services including primary education, healthcare, senior citizen support, zoning management, and infrastructure maintenance for residents across the scattered settlements.

Fjelldal village houses Norges Brannskole, Norway's primary national education and training facility for firefighters, making this remote Arctic municipality home to the country's most important fire safety education institution.
