Hardanger, District in western Norway

Hardanger is a district in western Norway stretching along a deep fjord with mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls shaping the landscape. The valley floor and slopes are covered with fruit orchards nestled between steep cliffs and forested areas.

This area was an independent kingdom during the Viking era, with Kinsarvik serving as its center of power. When Norway unified under Harald Fairhair, the region lost its separate status and became part of the larger kingdom.

The area has long been shaped by fruit farming, with blossoms covering the slopes each spring and orchards defining the landscape through the seasons. Local families continue working the land using methods passed down for generations, making farming central to how people live here.

You can cross the fjord using ferries that connect different parts of the district. Cycling paths run between towns and villages, offering both flat and hilly routes depending on where you go.

The name comes from Old Norse, combining a word for harsh weather with a term for the narrow fjord formation. This linguistic blend reflects how the landscape itself shaped what people called this place.
