Grumant, settlement in Svalbard municipality, Norway
Grumant is an abandoned mining settlement on Spitsbergen located in the far north of the archipelago. The site contains the remains of residential buildings, industrial structures, and infrastructure left behind when operations ceased decades ago.
The settlement was established in the early 1900s as a coal mining operation in the Arctic. Mining activities eventually declined and the site was abandoned, leaving behind a frozen snapshot of mid-20th century industrial life.
The location is accessible only by boat or helicopter and becomes difficult to reach during winter darkness. Visitors should come prepared with warm clothing and supplies, as there are no facilities or services available on site.
The buildings are locked in permafrost, which has naturally preserved them for decades. These harsh conditions make it a rare example of an Arctic time capsule where ordinary objects and structures from a bygone era remain intact.
