Lierne National Park

Lierne National Park is a protected area in Trøndelag that stretches across mountains, marshes, and lakes and connects with protected regions in Sweden. The landscape displays traces of the last Ice Age, with extensive moraine deposits and distinctive ridge formations.

The park was established in December 2004 to protect landscapes shaped by the last Ice Age. This creation was part of Norway's efforts to preserve important natural areas for the long term.

The visitor center, which opened in 2006, offers educational programs for schools and children to experience the local ecosystem through guided activities. Visitors can learn about the animals and plants that live in this region where mountains meet lowlands.

The area offers a large network of hiking trails for summer visits and cross-country skiing opportunities in winter, with designated camping spots spread throughout. Visitors should prepare for changeable weather and bring proper gear, especially in higher areas.

The area contains valuable wetland zones where tall birch forests and willow thickets create rich habitats at the border between mountain and lowland regions. These habitats are home to rare bird species that are rarely found elsewhere in the area.
