Ørje Fortress, Military fortress in Marker Municipality, Norway
Ørje Fortress is a military installation in Marker Municipality positioned along the Norwegian-Swedish border. It comprises two separate forts - Ørjekollen in the north and Lihammeren in the south - both featuring gun emplacements and connecting corridors.
The fortress was built 1901-1902 as a defensive installation against possible Swedish attacks. Following the Karlstad Treaty in 1905, it lost its military purpose and was decommissioned.
The fortress displays early 1900s Norwegian military design with its gun positions and defensive structures. Visitors can walk through these areas and see how soldiers were stationed throughout the complex.
The northern fort section was restored in 1991 and is open for visitors to explore. Sturdy footwear is advisable due to the uneven terrain and preserved military structures throughout the site.
At its operational peak, the site housed around 1,300 soldiers stationed throughout the complex. Swedish military planners viewed it as nearly impossible to breach through infantry assault.
