Hamnnes, Heritage trading post in Uløya Island, Norway
Hamnnes is a trading post located at the southern tip of Uløya Island, surrounded by mountains and the waters of Rotsundet strait. The site comprises several historic buildings and structures grouped around the harbor landing, forming a compact settlement that reflects its long maritime history.
Archaeological evidence shows human activity at this location dating back at least 6000 years, with stone age artifacts discovered across the area. The modern trading station evolved from this extended tradition of settlement and resource use on the island.
The name refers to an ancient harbor settlement, and the site still shows how people historically conducted fishing and trade through its daily operations. The buildings and structures reflect this heritage, and the way the place is used reveals the enduring connection between residents and the sea.
Access is only possible by ferry from Rotsund or Uløybukta, as there is no road connection to the site. Historic houses on the property offer accommodation for visitors who want to spend time exploring the area on foot.
This trading post is among the northernmost of its kind in Norway and earned the Olavsrose award in 2014 for maintaining active trading operations. The recognition celebrates the rare combination of living commerce alongside preservation of 19th-century architectural heritage.
