Ingøy radio transmitter

Ingøy radio transmitter, Radio transmitter in Måsøy, Norway.

Ingøy radio transmitter is a broadcasting facility on Ingøya island in northern Norway featuring a 362 meter tall guyed mast. This structure was once the tallest construction in Scandinavia and provided radio coverage to remote northern communities.

The original facility was built in 1911 and supported communications with Svalbard mining operations. It was destroyed during German occupation in 1940 and subsequently rebuilt.

The transmitter served as a primary communication hub for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, delivering NRK P1 radio programming across remote northern regions.

The transmitter sits on a remote island in the far north where harsh weather is common and access requires planning. Visitors should check local conditions before attempting to reach this exposed location.

The facility remained in operation until 2019 before being decommissioned, yet the distinctive steel tower stands as a lasting landmark in the Arctic radio landscape. For radio enthusiasts and industrial historians, the site represents a compelling relic of earlier telecommunications technology.
