Bogstad

Bogstad is a manor house with authentic 18th-century interiors set within maintained landscape gardens on a large estate. The property includes a gallery, a cafe located in a historic brewery building, and reception rooms that host various events.

The estate was initially managed by tenant farmers who answered to Hovedøya Monastery during Catholic times. After the 1536 Reformation, the Crown took control and shaped its subsequent development.

The manor reflects European ideals through its ballroom designed in classical style and paintings collected from Rome that fill its rooms. These spaces show how the wealthy family lived and entertained guests within this setting.

The grounds are accessible and offer several pathways for exploring the gardens and the main house. Comfortable shoes are recommended since walking through the sprawling gardens involves considerable distances.

The park was among the first in Scandinavia designed in the English style and contains experimental gardens with rare trees. These trees were tested to determine which species could adapt to the Nordic climate.
