Andenes Lighthouse, Heritage lighthouse in Andøy Municipality, Norway
Andenes Lighthouse is a cylindrical tower constructed from red cast iron plates located on the northern coast of Norway. The structure stands about 40 meters tall and is reinforced with approximately 90,000 bricks to resist harsh weather conditions.
Construction of this lighthouse began in 1859 following a series of maritime disasters in the region. The tower was built to improve navigation safety after a tragic incident in 1821 that claimed many lives at sea.
The lighthouse reflects the maritime identity of the fishing community and its dependence on safe passage at sea. Today visitors can learn about Norwegian seafaring through exhibits housed in an adjoining museum.
Reaching the observation balcony involves climbing 148 steps across nine levels, so come prepared for physical exertion. The balcony at the top opens up wide views across the sea and surrounding landscape.
The light does not operate from April through August because the midnight sun keeps the region bright around the clock during summer. During these months, artificial illumination becomes unnecessary for guiding ships safely.
