Koengen, Open-air concert venue near Bergenhus Fortress, Bergen, Norway.
Koengen is an open-air music venue in Bergen, set on a former military ground next to the medieval Bergenhus Fortress. The stage is positioned so that the fortress walls serve as a natural backdrop behind the performers.
The ground was originally used by the military as a storage and drill area before it was converted into a performance space. The stone walls of the adjacent fortress, which date back to the Middle Ages, were left in place and became part of the new setting.
For many Norwegians, a summer concert here is a seasonal tradition tied to Bergen's warm months. The crowd stands on the open ground in front of the stage, with the old fortress walls forming a natural frame around the audience.
The venue is within walking distance of Bergen's city center and is well connected to public transport. Parking at the site itself is limited during events, so nearby parking garages are a better option for those arriving by car.
Although the site is now known mainly for pop concerts, it has also hosted classical performances and theatre, showing how the space has shifted in purpose over the decades. Outside of events, the open ground looks plain and unremarkable, which makes the transformation during a concert all the more noticeable.
