Risør Underwater Post Office, Underwater postal facility in Risør, Norway.
The Risør Underwater Post Office is a working postal facility housed in a fiberglass diving bell structure anchored at roughly 4 meters depth with a 5-ton weight. The interior remains air-filled, allowing the postmaster to regularly handle and process mail in dry conditions.
The facility was created in 2004 by a local diving club seeking to establish something remarkable in Norwegian postal history. It faced closure in 2011 but was saved by intervention from the tourism board and has continued operating since.
The place gets its distinctive identity from operating below the water surface, and visitors can observe the unusual fiberglass structure while snorkeling or diving. It reflects how the local community embraces its maritime setting in imaginative ways.
Visitors can deposit letters in a post box near the pier, where the postmaster collects them multiple times a week in waterproof containers. The best time to experience this facility is during the summer months when these special pickups happen regularly.
Letters processed here receive special cancellation marks featuring underwater motifs that set them apart from regular mail. These distinctive stamps make this location particularly interesting for postcard and letter collectors.
