Peer Gynt Sculpture Park, Sculpture park in Løren, Oslo, Norway
Peer Gynt Sculpture Park is an outdoor park in the Grünerløkka neighborhood of Oslo, with around 20 sculptures placed along winding paths through a green area. Each work depicts a different scene or character from Ibsen's play and was created by artists from different countries.
The park was opened in 2006 by the Norwegian company Selvaag to mark the international Ibsen year, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the playwright's death. Artists from several countries took part in a competition to create their own interpretation of scenes from the play.
The sculptures show characters and scenes from Henrik Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt", published in 1867. Walking through the park, visitors encounter the story's figures in three dimensions, which makes the work feel immediate and tangible rather than distant.
The park is in the Grünerløkka neighborhood and is freely accessible at any time, making it easy to combine with a walk through the area. A mobile app gives more information about each sculpture and its connection to the play.
One of the artists involved is Italian painter and sculptor Enzo Cucchi, who is otherwise known mainly for large-scale paintings. His participation in this project was unusual, as he rarely works with literary subjects in sculptural form.
