Gokstad Mound, Viking burial mound in Sandefjord Municipality, Norway
The Gokstad burial mound measures 50 meters in diameter and 5 meters in height, constructed with layers of turf and blue clay soil.
Archaeological excavations in 1880 revealed the Gokstad ship, dating from 890 CE, along with numerous artifacts including shields, beds, and kitchen equipment.
The burial contained remains of various animals including twelve horses, eight dogs, two northern goshawks, and two peacocks, reflecting Norse burial traditions.
The burial mound location near the Viking Age coastline indicates strategic placement for ship transport, as water levels were higher during that period.
The deceased individual in the burial chamber measured approximately 181-183 centimeters tall and was laid out on a specially constructed bed within the ship.
