Holmen gård, Heritage farm in Gjerstad, Norway.
Holmen Gård is a heritage site comprising five protected buildings located in Gjerstad municipality in southern Norway. The structures sit within a traditional wetland environment and together form a cohesive historical farm complex.
The property originated around 1800 following the division of Trydal farm between two brothers, with a two-story timber house constructed in 1806. This founding period shaped its development as a working farm for generations.
From 1973 to 2011, the farm served as a national training center where people learned traditional Norwegian folk arts and crafts. Visitors came to study and practice these skills in a living cultural environment.
The site is publicly accessible and sits in a rural setting with good visibility from the road. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear for the wetland environment and come prepared for changing weather conditions.
The Bjorvasstua is a 1721 building decorated with painted motifs from the 1770s that was relocated to this property during World War I. Its hand-painted details represent a style common among Norwegian farmhouses of that era.
