Kleivstua, hotel at Krokkleiva in Hole, Buskerud, Norway
Kleivstua is a hotel located in the countryside near Hole, made up of 18 small wooden houses arranged to form a compact village. These buildings contain 42 rooms in different sizes, each with simple traditional design that has been maintained over time.
Kleivstua was founded around 1780 as a resting place for travelers crossing Krokskogen and began as a simple mountain pasture. After the road was rerouted through Sørkleiva around 1807, it became a key stopping point, and by the 1860s it transformed into a tourist hotel.
Kleivstua takes its name from the steep climb up Sørkleiva that travelers once had to navigate. The 18 wooden houses reflect the tradition of a mountain stop where people rested, shared meals, and exchanged stories about their journeys.
The hotel is located about 1.5 kilometers from the Gudbrandsdalsleden hiking trail and operates year-round except during July. Breakfast is included with your room, and you can request packed lunches to take on your outdoor activities.
One of the oldest cabins, Løvlia, houses a beautifully carved wooden headboard that was a gift from singer Diana Ross, complete with mysterious carved initials. From 1958 to 1977, a barrel lift system transported supplies up the steep cliff face, an ingenious solution to the challenging terrain.
