Kalvøysund festning, Coastal fort in Arendal, Norway
Kalvøysund festning is a coastal fortification on Flostaøya island, spread across a large area with multiple gun positions and military structures. Bunkers and trenches from World War II remain visible throughout the site, connected in a network that once served the defense system.
German forces built this fortification starting in 1941 as part of their coastal defense strategy during World War II. The site was designed to control the sound passage and equipped with weapons and bunkers that reflected contemporary military technology.
The name comes from the sound passage it was built to protect, and the layout shows typical World War II military design with its bunkers and fortifications. Visitors walking through can see how the coastal defense was organized and built.
This is an open-air site where visitors can walk freely through bunker remains and explore military structures at their own pace. The grounds also include a public swimming area, making it a good spot for combining history with outdoor recreation.
A large tunnel complex with multiple chambers runs beneath the rocky terrain and is now used by a shooting club. These underground spaces were never used for combat during the war and retain their original structure from the wartime construction.
