The Saga Column, Historical monument in Bøverdalen, Norway
The Saga Column is a monument in Bøverdalen located near the Elveseter tourist hotel, standing approximately 34 meters tall. It is constructed of Kyanite stone and plaster, with sculptural reliefs covering its surface and a statue of King Harald Hårfagre positioned at its summit.
Construction of the monument began in the 1920s but was halted during World War II when the structure was only half finished. The project remained suspended for two decades until Åmund Elvesæter oversaw its completion in 1992.
The column displays scenes from Norwegian history, beginning with the Battle of Hafrsfjord and concluding with the 1814 constitution. Visitors can observe these reliefs showing key moments that shaped the nation.
The monument stands in an open mountain landscape and is easily accessible from the nearby hotel. Visitors can view the structure year-round from the outside, and it is wise to be mindful of the steep terrain surrounding the site.
Political disagreements delayed the monument's completion for decades, making it an unusual example of interrupted development in Norwegian monument building. The prolonged standstill gave the site a distinctive history unlike most other structures of its kind.
