Lipa, Component city in Batangas Province, Philippines

Lipa is a city on elevated ground in Batangas Province, Philippines, roughly 78 kilometers south of Manila. The city sits at 157 meters above sea level and counted around 372,931 residents in 2020.

Augustinian missionaries from Spain founded a settlement named San Sebastian in 1605, which became a municipality in 1702. The place received city status in 1887 and developed into a regional trading center.

The San Sebastian Cathedral at the center reflects the Catholic traditions of the area and draws worshippers from across the region. Around the market streets, vendors sell fresh fruit and local specialties that shape the daily life of residents.

The Southern Tagalog Arterial Road links the city to Manila and other destinations across the province, while the central bus station Lipa City Grand Terminal serves as a major hub. Travelers find numerous connections here to different parts of the region.

The coffee industry flourished here during the 19th century and turned the place into a major producer of Kapeng Barako, a strong Philippine coffee variety. Some plantations and roasters in the surrounding area still recall this tradition today.
