Guadiana International Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge between Ayamonte, Spain and Castro Marim, Portugal.

The Guadiana International Bridge extends 666 meters across the Guadiana River, featuring two towers reaching heights of 95 and 96 meters respectively.

Construction began after Portugal and Spain signed an agreement in 1985, following extensive feasibility studies that started in the 1960s.

This structure represents the southernmost land crossing between Spain and Portugal, connecting the regions of Andalusia and Algarve through international motorways.

Vehicles can cross the bridge without paying tolls, although fees apply when continuing on the Portuguese A22 motorway after entering Portugal.

The Spanish tower stands on an artificial island constructed in the riverbed, while the Portuguese tower rests on natural ground.

Gustave Eiffel metal bridges

Gustave Eiffel and his firm designed and constructed metal bridges across several continents between the 1860s and early 1900s. These structures enabled railway and road connections over rivers, gorges, and valleys. The bridges used wrought iron and later steel, with truss and arch designs that represented advanced engineering methods for their time. Examples of this work are found in Portugal, where the Maria Pia Bridge crosses the Douro River, and in France, including the Garabit Viaduct over the Truyère. In Vietnam, the Long Bien Bridge connects Hanoi across the Red River. Additional structures stand in Peru, Bolivia, and other South American countries. Many of these bridges remain operational or accessible as preserved engineering monuments.
