Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias

The church features three naves with the central one rising higher and wider, accessed through a terracotta brick staircase bordered by stone columns.

The structure gained prominence after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake when minimal damage to the town was attributed to the protection of Virgin of Angustias.

The main altar displays a combination of Mudejar and Renaissance decorative elements, with robust columns supporting the arch adorned with religious and noble family symbols.

The church stands at an elevated position near the Guadiana River, serving as both the main parish of Ayamonte and a designated cultural heritage monument.

Local tradition tells of a miraculous image of the Virgin found in the river, leading to a dispute between Spanish and Portuguese communities over its possession.
