The fortress features a star-shaped design with six bastions connected by curtain walls, spanning 2500 meters of perimeter at 763 meters above sea level.
The structure transformed from a 14th-century castle into a strategic fortress during the 17th century, serving as a defense point against Spanish and French invasions.
The fortress contains narrow streets lined with traditional Portuguese houses, religious buildings, and civic structures that reflect regional architectural styles.
Visitors can access the fortress through three main arched gateways and explore the elevated walkways that provide views of the surrounding Portuguese-Spanish border region.
A catastrophic explosion in 1810, caused by French artillery hitting the gunpowder magazine, led to extensive damage that fundamentally altered the fortress structure.
