Henri Coandă International Airport, International airport in Otopeni, Romania
Henri Coandă International Airport is an international airport in Otopeni, Romania, located 16.5 kilometers north of central Bucharest with two parallel runways each measuring 3,500 meters in length. The facility covers 605 hectares of land with infrastructure for commercial flight connections around the world.
Originally built as a civil aviation center, the site served as a Luftwaffe airbase during World War II before converting to commercial operations in 1965. This transformation marked the beginning of modern air travel in Romania following the end of the conflict.
The terminal hosts rotating exhibitions throughout the year that connect travelers with Romanian traditions through art installations and cultural presentations. These displays transform the space into more than just a transit point on the way to a final destination.
The terminal provides 104 check-in desks and 38 gates for arriving and departing passengers. Regular train connections to Bucharest North Railway Station run every 40 minutes and offer a direct link to the city center.
In 2023, the airport recorded 14,630,715 passengers, representing a 16.11 percent increase from the previous year. This growth reflects its expanding role as the country's primary aviation gateway.
