Castra of Buciumi, Roman military fort in Buciumi, Romania.
Castra of Buciumi is an ancient Roman military fort located near the village of Buciumi in northwestern Romania. The structure displays a rectangular layout with reinforced corner positions and defensive towers positioned along the outer perimeter.
The fort was established in the 2nd century under Emperor Trajan as a key defensive stronghold in this frontier region. It underwent major rebuilding phases as military needs changed and construction methods evolved.
The name reflects the Roman military presence that shaped this region for centuries. Walking through the site today, you can sense how this fortress was central to controlling movement across the mountains and maintaining order throughout the province.
The site is located about a half-kilometer northwest of Buciumi village center and is accessible on foot. Many artifacts recovered here are now displayed at the Sălaj County Museum in Zalău, offering additional context about daily life in the fort.
The fort served not just as a military base but also as a crucial control point for trade, as it commanded the passage through the Rag Pass in the Meseș Mountains. This strategic location made it a meeting point where goods and travelers from different regions converged.
