Chioar Fortress consists of stone walls on a hilltop made from river stones and fired bricks arranged in a rectangular defensive structure. The compound sits atop the Preluca Massif and reveals the building techniques of this medieval fortification.
The fortress was built before 1319 and served as a strategic defense point in Transylvania for centuries. Austrian forces destroyed it in 1713, ending its role as a military stronghold.
The fortress displays medieval defensive architecture through its narrow arrow slits and reinforced walls, features still visible in the ruins today. These elements shaped how the structure functioned as a protective stronghold in the region.
The fortress is reached via a marked hiking trail of about 3 kilometers starting from Berchezoaia village, marked with green arrows. The path climbs uphill to the hilltop, so visitors should wear proper footwear and allow sufficient time for the walk.
When viewed from above, the fortress layout forms the shape of an eagle with outstretched wings. This distinctive silhouette was likely an intentional design choice that served both a strategic and symbolic purpose.
