Sărata-Monteoru is a spa village in Buzău County located at roughly 186 meters elevation in rolling hills in southeastern Romania. Multiple facilities throughout the settlement use natural mineral springs containing bromine, iodine, and salt for therapeutic treatments.
Development of the village began in 1895 when Greek entrepreneur Grigore Monteoru built the first spa facilities using profits from local oil extraction. This early industrial activity shaped the settlement's economy for decades to follow.
The Monteoru culture from the Bronze Age was discovered through excavations on Cetăţuia Hill and shows how people lived in this region thousands of years ago. Visitors can still see traces of this ancient settlement in local collections and at the original dig sites.
The village is best explored on foot since most facilities and springs are scattered throughout the settlement. Spring and summer months offer the most comfortable conditions for walking and visiting the various bathing areas.
The settlement houses a petroleum mine from the 19th century that operated using oil extraction methods and stands today as a rare example of industrial heritage. This mining operation reveals how closely mineral resources and energy production were linked in this area.
