Welcome to the touristic guide of the Evangelical Church in Râșnov, a historic and architectural monument located in Brașov County. This building was constructed in the 13th century and is listed as a historical monument under code LMI BV-II-a-A-11763. The church was built at the beginning of the 14th century with the dedication to St. Matthias, as a basilica in the transitional style from Romanesque to Gothic. The Romanesque characteristics of the beginning are blurred by other Gothic ones, intervened in two stages: the restoration of the route from the sanctuary in a heptagonal shape, buttresses in retreat, windows in broken arch, vaults with ogives, and tronconic consoles. According to a chronicler from 1630, taken over by Saxon historiography, in the years 1542-1543, due to the activity of Pastor Nikolaus Stephani, most of the Saxon community converted to Lutheranism, and the place of worship underwent the usual modifications imposed by the denial of images with saints. The side altars and other objects bearing images of saints were removed, and the surfaces of mural painting, which had been created in the 14th-15th centuries, were covered. Parts of the old wall painting began to be visible again from 1932 on the north wall of the choir. Outside, there is a very degraded image of Jesus and the instruments of the Passion, while inside, below the arches of the vaults, there is a series of scenes from the Cycle of the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus. In 1773, the walls of the church were raised. Visitors to the Evangelical Church in Râșnov can admire the unique architecture that blends Romanesque and Gothic styles. The seven-sided apse, the buttresses, and the pointed arches are some of the most notable features of this building. The interior of the church is also impressive, with its vaulted ceilings and tronconic consoles. The church is open to visitors every day, and there is no admission fee. Visitors are advised to dress modestly and respectfully as it is a place of worship. Photography is allowed but only without flash. Guided tours are available for those who want to learn more about the history and architecture of the church. In addition to visiting the church, tourists can explore the charming town of Râșnov, which is known for its medieval fortress and stunning mountain views. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes in the area where visitors can enjoy traditional Romanian cuisine and relax after a day of sightseeing. Overall, the Evangelical Church in Râșnov is a must-see destination for anyone interested in history and architecture. Its unique blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, combined with its rich history, make it a fascinating place to visit.
