Haller Castle in Coplean, Historic monument in Coplean, Romania.
Haller Castle in Coplean is a manor house with a rectangular layout supported by six stone columns at its entrance. The main building contains a basement, ground floor, and upper level with thick stone walls throughout.
The building rose between 1725 and 1771 when Ioan Haller, governor of Transylvania, commissioned its construction. He reused stones from an ancient Roman fort to replace an earlier manor that previously stood on the site.
The castle displays early Transylvanian Baroque forms that Austrian sculptor Anton Schuchbauer later enhanced with Rococo decorations. This blend of two architectural styles remains visible today in the facades and ornamental details.
The site is best accessed by allowing time to navigate the rural surroundings of Coplean. Visitors should wear proper footwear since the grounds may be uneven, and caution is advised when exploring the aged structure and its grounds.
A fire in 1920 destroyed the Baroque roof, significantly altering the building's appearance. After this loss, it later served as an agricultural cooperative before being abandoned following the political changes of 1989.
