Lake Baikal, Deepest lake in Russia

Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, containing 22–23% of the world's fresh surface water.

Formed as an ancient rift valley, Lake Baikal has the typical long crescent shape with a surface area of 31,722 km2.

The lake is considered sacred by the local Buryat people who have lived in the area for thousands of years.

It is home to more than 1,700 species of plants and animals, two-thirds of which can be found nowhere else in the world.

Lake Baikal is also known for its remarkable clarity of water and biodiversity.
